Where Your Water Comes From

Most homes around Okeechobee draw from the surficial aquifer, a layer of sand, shell, and limestone close to the surface. United States Geological Survey studies of Okeechobee County found that shallow domestic wells are commonly finished at depths somewhere between about 30 and 240 feet, depending on where the best water sits.

Far below it lies the Floridan aquifer, one of the most productive aquifers in the country. In Okeechobee County, Floridan wells often run 750 feet or deeper. They are usually reserved for farms and large users, and the water can be mineralized, so most homeowners do not need one.

Surficial aquifer: shallower, lower cost to drill, the usual choice for a single home.
Floridan aquifer: much deeper, very high volume, typically used for irrigation and livestock.
Water quality: iron, sulfur, and hardness vary by location. We test and treat as needed.
Setbacks: Florida rules keep septic tanks and drainfields at least 75 feet from a private drinking water well.

Inspections & Maintenance

A yearly check of the pump, pressure tank, wellhead seal, and water quality catches small problems before they leave you without water. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing private wells for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year. We also inspect wells for home sales and purchases.

Jetting & Cleaning

Sand, scale, and iron bacteria slowly choke a well. Jetting and cleaning can restore lost flow and clear up cloudy or discolored water, often for far less than a new well.
